Prison Island
Prison Island (Changuu Island) is a small island located just 5.6 kilometers northwest of Stone Town, making it one of Zanzibar's most accessible and popular excursions. Despite its ominous name, the island has a fascinating and layered history.
Originally used as a detention facility for rebellious slaves in the 1860s, then converted to a quarantine station for yellow fever cases, the island is now home to a sanctuary of giant Aldabra tortoises - some over 100 years old. Visitors can walk among these gentle giants, feed them, and learn about conservation efforts.
The island is also surrounded by a vibrant coral reef, making it an excellent snorkeling spot. After exploring, relax on the pristine beach, take a swim in the turquoise waters, and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch on the shore. It's the perfect half-day escape from Stone Town.
